Gentle Sedation Dentistry Options

We get it, most people are nervous about going to the dentist. But sometimes that nervousness can escalate into fear. If you have severe dental anxiety, a low pain tolerance, a sensitive gag reflex, or any other condition that may prevent you from sitting still in a dentist’s chair, you may be a candidate for dental sedation. We offer two different sedation options to make your visit as comfortable as possible:

Nitrous Oxide

Using nitrous oxide (a.k.a. laughing gas) can be very helpful to people with dental anxiety. Nitrous oxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that you inhale through a mask. The use of nitrous oxide creates a euphoric sensation and puts you into a state of relaxation. You will still be awake and able to answer questions during your dental procedure, but your dental anxiety will be gone, allowing you a more comfortable experience. Appropriate for a wide range of procedures from routine cleanings to placing a filling, the effects of nitrous oxide will wear off quickly after your procedure, so you will be able to drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation can help with more significant dental anxiety and can be used for longer procedures such as placing a crown or performing root canal therapy. If the doctor decides that using oral sedatives will benefit you, you will be given a relaxation pill about an hour before your procedure. During the procedure, you will feel relaxed and detached but awake and still able to answer the dentist’s questions. It is important to have someone drive you home from your appointment if you use an oral sedative. The effects of the sedative should wear off in a few hours.
